The Networked Teacher

This popular flicr image by courosa, called “The Networked Teacher”, is a strong visual representation of the modern teacher, showing how educators today are more “interconnected” with resources than a teacher not even ten years ago could imagine.

To many, this is overwhelming. To others, it’s just how it is. To a special few, it opens up a whole world of the possible, finding creative inspiration, support, collaboration, and strength in each connection.

What does it mean to you? And does this represent you?

    I worked in the software biz before I became a teacher. I am comfortable with technology and incorporate it into my planning, teaching and personal learning but I also find that there are times when we over use or mis-use it.

    For example email at my school is over-used. My mailbox usually rides close to the maximum capacity. But I really think we as a school need to know what and when it’s appropriate to send “stuff”. We need to learn how to use network storage etc.

    What a great wheel. I’m going to fwd that to my staff. We live in a time where teachers have to be open to technology and change. Those who aren’t “networked” are going to be less effective. When I do trainings for my staff on technology I always tell them: “This stuff makes your job easier not harder.” Oh, I also wanted to add that the wheel is in sync with the California standard for the teaching profession #6.

    Any method, aid, resource, approach can be overused, underused, misused or used effectively; not just technology. Whatever the tool or process is, it should serve pedagogy. I would suggest that there is more misuse out there of the non-technological.

    Alec, great graphic … gonna go read that paper now!

    This is pretty much me, but more personally than in terms of me as an educator. I have all kinds of ideas for using this “network” in the classroom, but we have lots of students that don’t have access at home, and not enough at school. There are also times when I want to use a great web app or tool, but don’t because of the adult content that is only a few clicks away on some sites. I would be less concerned if I high school or middle, but elementary students’ parents can freak out pretty easily sometimes.

    @James:

    I wonder if there is a graphic for the “networked student” to compare with?
